Calligraphy for Beginners: Nib Size and Paper Weight

A pointed nib makes its line from pressure, and a broad-edge nib from its width, 1.5 to 6 mm on Pilot's pens. Either needs smooth paper: 32 lb laser paper is about 120 g/m², and owners say it stops bleed-through.

Pick the nib family by the script you want to learn

Calligraphy nibs come in 2 families. A pointed nib, such as the Nikko G, is split and flexible, so pressure opens the tines and turns a hairline into a thick downstroke. It is the nib for copperplate, Spencerian and modern pointed-pen scripts.

A broad-edge nib has a flat, fixed width. Pilot’s Parallel pens come in 1.5, 2.4, 3.8 and 6.0 mm. Speedball’s C-series dip nibs run from C-0, the widest, to C-6, the narrowest. Broad-edge nibs suit italic, gothic and uncial.

Script Nib family Width comes from
Copperplate, Spencerian Pointed Pressure on the nib
Modern pointed-pen Pointed Pressure on the nib
Italic, gothic, uncial Broad-edge The nib’s own width
Modern brush lettering Brush pen Pressure on the tip

For a broad-edge set without dip pens, the Pilot Parallel set profile covers the 4-pen starter.

The Nikko G holds ink and gives clear thick and thin lines

The Postman’s Knock, a calligraphy teaching site, names the Nikko G its pick for beginners in an article with that title. Owners on Amazon say much the same: they describe a nib that holds ink well and gives clear contrast between thick and thin strokes.

Durability is where reports divide. Some owners find the nib sturdy, and others find it brittle. A 3-pack gives room for a nib that fails early.

Zebra’s G nib is the alternative in a 10-pack. Its listing describes an elastic, soft nib that draws strong or weak lines with pressure, and owners report it works in oblique holders and on most papers.

An oblique holder angles the nib for slanted scripts

Copperplate and Spencerian are written on a steep slant. An oblique holder sets the nib off to one side of the shaft, which angles it to match that slant for a right-handed writer.

Speedball’s oblique set pairs the holder with 4 No. 101 and 2 No. 103 points, and its listing names copperplate and Spencerian as the scripts it is made for.

Owners describe it as suitable for beginners and for practice. The included nibs divide them: some like the variety, and others find them poor quality or sharp and scratchy.

It ranks last here on rating, and the nib complaints are the reason.

Paper weight: 32 lb laser paper is about 120 g/m²

US paper is sold by the pound, and the rest of the world by grams per square metre. WCP Solutions’ conversion chart gives these approximate equivalents for bond and laser paper:

US bond weight Approximate g/m²
20 lb 75
24 lb 90
28 lb 105
32 lb 120

A 20 lb copy paper is about 75 g/m². HP Premium32 is 32 lb, about 120 g/m², with an ultra-smooth finish. Its owners use it for calligraphy and fountain pens, and they say its thickness stops ink bleeding through.

Owners praise its smooth surface, which they describe as not too glossy, and its resistance to bleed-through, including with water-based inks. It is bright white and runs through home printers.

That makes it easy to print a guide sheet directly onto the page you write on. Tombow USA recommends it for its hard-tip Fudenosuke brush pen.

Rhodia’s 80 g vellum pad adds a dot grid for practice

Rhodia’s No16 pad uses 80 g superfine vellum paper, which Rhodia markets for hand lettering and calligraphy. The dot grid gives a guide for letter height and slant without a printed sheet, and owners describe a surface that pens move over smoothly.

Semi-translucent paper lets a guide sheet show through

Tombow USA lists tracing paper, marker paper and vellum among the papers it recommends for its brush pens. A semi-translucent sheet placed over a printed guide lets a beginner follow slant lines and letter shapes without drawing them.

Canson’s XL marker pad is 70 g, or 18 lb, semi-translucent and 9 x 12 inches. It is lighter than HP Premium32, but owners report it resists bleed, including repeated marker strokes.

Owners use it for calligraphy practice and marker work, praise a smooth surface that pens glide over, and call it worth the price. Its bleed resistance comes up often.

The complaint is durability: pages come loose from the pad easily.
