Calligraphy nibs come in 2 families. A pointed nib, such as the Nikko G, is split and flexible, so pressure opens the tines and turns a hairline into a thick downstroke. It is the nib for copperplate, Spencerian and modern pointed-pen scripts.
A broad-edge nib has a flat, fixed width. Pilot’s Parallel pens come in 1.5, 2.4, 3.8 and 6.0 mm. Speedball’s C-series dip nibs run from C-0, the widest, to C-6, the narrowest. Broad-edge nibs suit italic, gothic and uncial.

The Postman’s Knock, a calligraphy teaching site, names the Nikko G its pick for beginners in an article with that title. Owners on Amazon say much the same: they describe a nib that holds ink well and gives clear contrast between thick and thin strokes.
